Where to find it

  • Manager > Administration > Server Settings menu > Data Protection category > Enable Data Protection Feature setting

Purpose

If this setting is selected (which it is, by default), various data protection guidelines that are in compliance with the European General Data Protection Guidelines (GDPR) are put in place. This includes:

  • The user's personal consent to collect personal data as well as the possibility to withdraw this consent (under Settings > Personal Data > Withdraw Privacy Statement Consent)
  • The ability for users to view the personal data collected (under Settings > User Info)
  • The ability for users to view changes made to personal data (under Settings > Personal Data)
  • The provision of functions to data administrators to purge all personal data individually or overall (a.k.a. "the right to be forgotten") (under Administration > Users > {user} > Purge All Personal Data)

Use

This setting should only be turned off (deselected) if you are 100% sure you do not need GDPR provisions (i.e. you have no users (Authors or Learners)) in Europe. California in the United States also has similar requirements, so you should check those, too.
