Scope
- Content object > Basic Properties > Content Categories
Purpose
The Content Categories' property can be used to associate one or more works or text strings with the parent content object. In this regard they are similar to Tags but the values specified in this property are visible to users, being used to group content objects in the Desktop Assistant Content list.
Typically (and by default) Content Categories are used to categorize content objects by object type, but as Content Categories are just texts, you can use any other categorization - such as system release, owning organization, or user group; anything that makes sense to the users.
Use
Master Authors can predefine a set of Content Categories via menu option Tools > Edit Content Categories, although Authors are free to enter any value in this property field. Because these are seen by users, it is recommended that a finite list of Content Categories be predefined, and Authors 'strongly discouraged' from entering additional ones (there is no way to prevent Authors from creating their own categories). It is also recommended that the number of available Content Categories be limited to the level that only two or three are visible at any one time in the Desktop Assistant.
You can use the (new in Release 1908) function Tools > Set/Unset Content Categories to change the Content Categories property for multiple content objects at the same time. When using this function, you can only select from the predefined list of master Content Categories.
